Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, a handsome and talented young man had the voice of an angel in pain. All his friends said he was amazing.

“You are a star! People should pay you for that.”

Rightly so, he believed them. And the young man wrote a song. Plucking his guitar, wailing and warbling, he recorded it in his friend’s basement studio. It was mixed to perfection. In short order, the young man saw his name and song on a famous online store portal.

The producer chanted, “I’m gonna be rich. I’m gonna be a star.” But the young and handsome and talented young man missed the absence of “we” and as he and his producer buddy gave each other high-fives and danced a jig around the mixing board.

But as in all fairy tales, dark days came when no money was sent to them for his awesome song. When he asked the famous online store why no money had accrued when he knew his friends at least had downloaded the song, the store’s minions said, “Oh, we owe you money? Hmmmm…let’s see how many have left the shelf. Oh, I see…not sure why you’re asking because you don’t own the song.”

“But of course I own the song,” he wailed in the perfectly painful way he had. “See! I’m the artist. I wrote it. I sang it. I played it.”

“Right…well, ummmm…the paperwork shows that Producer Xacto is the writer and publisher. You’re just the artist.”

“Producer Xacto? Why, he’s my friend. He only mixed it for me. I OWN IT AND I WANT MY MONEY.”

But no amount of hollering, even if it was in his perfectly painful wail, would move the minions to rule in his favor. Minions insisted on sending the money to Producer Xacto, or PX as he had begun to call himself around town.

“Fine. I’ll go to PX and get the money,” said the handsome and talented young man.

But his good friend could not be found. Even when Producer Xacto’s car was in the driveway, he did not answer the door when his friend knocked. After a while PX moved, and our handsome and talented young man decided to record the song again, and this time make a video of it.

When it was finished, (he did it all by himself so nobody could steal it), he put it on another equally famous online video watching portal who, in short order, sent him a take-down request for copyright infringement, and blocked him from ever putting up anything ever again.

Our poor, poor, handsome and talented young man is now singing the burger-flipping blues as he wonders why he will not live happily ever after.

Is this the end of his sad little story? Hmmmm…maybe not. We shall see.
