Having read the previous blog, let’s get into it. Your hanky is handy, right?
There are a few select investors and international companies whose money is tied up in selling magic snake oil to content creators. What is that snake oil? Let’s see if we can ascertain that from these sample headlines, shall we?
“CDs ARE DEAD! ALBUMS ARE PASSE!”
“STREAMING IS GOD! SINGLES ARE KING!”
When I read an article with those conclusions, I ask myself if that writer has been hired to enthusiastically encourage those beliefs or if he is a dupe. Moving on.
Suffice it to say, I am not the only one calling BS on those headlines. The problem though, is something I run into time after time after time of consultation sessions with artists, DIY/Indies, and singer/songwriters, and when talking with other content creators/owners/marketers in the music business:
Content creators and performers sign up and upload everything without reading the contracts. “But, Angela,” they whine, “they promised to send me a check. And they sent me a check.” Yeah? Really? For how much? “Oh, you know…” and they have the grace to look ashamed because right then they’ve admitted it.
They believe in the magical powers of snake oil and they sucked down every drop of it and are begging for more.
But when they get home, their aches and pains have not subsided. They are not able to show a profit. They are not able to license their own works. And they write another song. You know the one. The song entitled “The Man”. They sing the blues about how they are getting cheated, or how romantic it is to starve for your art.
Honestly. Really?
So I ask: Are YOU part of the problem or part of the solution?
What is that solution? I’ll tell you. It’s taking care of your own business, that’s what it is. It’s understanding that you are a business owner with product to create, hold in inventory, track, and sell. It’s setting up your own online store. It’s putting processes in place to handle all that easily, systematically, and it’s knowing when to let your product out into the world in order to properly get the money for it.
Let me tell you something, folks. There’s a lot of companies out there willing to help you. The problem is, they are willing to help you once you’ve got an income stream and you are plugged into the system they are plugged into.
So, who is helping with the basic foundational business processes that will help you get an provable income stream? Ah, that I know and that is coming shortly. When it is ready, trust me on this: I’ll be letting you know all about it.
In the meantime, stop buying the promises of the snake oil salesmen.
